PPF: paint protection film
PPF is a clear film applied over the paint. It takes the stone chips and light scratches so the paint underneath doesn't. Most owners start with the front of the car, where chips happen, and some cover the whole car.
What PPF is and isn't
PPF is a physical layer between the road and your paint. It's not a coating and it's not a wrap. It won't fix paint that's already damaged, so we check the paint and note existing marks before we start.
Finish
- Gloss: keeps the factory shine
- Matte or satin: turns gloss paint to a flat or soft finish, and protects matte paint
- Colour PPF: changes the colour and protects the paint at the same time
A colour-change wrap is another way to change the colour. It is not PPF. For glass, see window tint.
How we install it
- We inspect the paint and photograph existing marks.
- We wash and decontaminate the car.
- We correct the paint where we've agreed to.
- We install the film.
- We check every edge.
- We hand the car over with a care sheet.
Care, records and removal
At handover you get the film name, the panels covered, the install date and the manufacturer's warranty document. Keep them with the car's papers. If the film ever needs to come off, it should be removed by an installer.
Warranty
Shinobi Films: 5-year warranty. For XPEL, STEK, 3M, SunTek and Avery Dennison, each manufacturer offers its own warranty. Ask us for the document for your film.

PPF or ceramic coating?
| Compared | PPF | Ceramic coating |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A clear film over the paint | A thin liquid layer that hardens on the paint |
| Stone chips | Takes the chip instead of the paint | Won't stop chips |
| Washing and gloss | Wash as normal, following the care sheet | Easier to clean, adds gloss |
| Finish options | Gloss, matte or satin, colour | Goes over the existing finish |
Some owners put PPF on the front and a coating on the rest. More in our guide: PPF, ceramic coating or a wrap.
