Coilovers vs air suspension

Coilovers or air suspension for Philippine roads? Handling, ride height, daily comfort and ownership trade-offs explained plainly.

Lower the car and you immediately face a fork: coilovers vs air suspension. One is a mechanical spring and damper in a single unit. The other swaps springs for air bags you can raise and lower from the cabin.

Both show up in our Quezon City bay — track-leaning GR86s on coilovers, luxury SUVs in for air strut leaks, show builds that bag at the weekend. This guide is the honest trade-off list for Philippine roads, not a product brochure.

What each system is

Coilovers combine a spring and shock in one adjustable package. You set ride height (within the kit's range), and many kits let you tweak damping. Once set, the height stays put until you wrench it again.

Air suspension uses rubber bags filled by an onboard compressor and tank. Ride height becomes a button press: low for the look, up for speed bumps and driveway lips. Some systems also adjust firmness.

Factory air (common on German and British SUVs) is a comfort system. Aftermarket air is often chosen for stance and adjustability. Different goals, same basic idea.

Slam at a meet, raise to drive home

If the car is a weekend canyon or autocross toy that also does grocery runs, coilovers are the usual answer. If you need to clear Quezon City flood puddles on Monday and sit low at a meet on Saturday, air's adjustability is the point.

Philippine roads change the math

Our streets are a mix of smooth asphalt, sudden patches, steep driveway ramps and the occasional flooded dip after rain.

  • Fixed low coilovers look good and turn in well. They also scrape on entries that a stock car clears. Pick a height you can live with every day, not just for photos.
  • Air lets you raise for the bad stretches and drop when you park. That flexibility is why bags stay popular here.
  • Heat and stop-go traffic work the compressor on air cars. A healthy system and sensible management settings matter more than the bag brand sticker.

We handle coilovers installs and air suspension repair (leaks, struts, compressors) in the same workshop. On GR86 / 86 / BRZ platforms the coilover route is the common build path — more under GR86 / 86 / BRZ.

Ownership realities (no scare tactics)

Air systems need occasional attention. Bags eventually crack. Fittings weep. Compressors that run too often are telling you something. Catch a slow leak early and it is a parts job; ignore it and you drive on the bump stops.

Coilovers are simpler. They still wear. Cheap kits with soft damping go flat. Mounts and top hats matter as much as the spring rate on the box.

Neither system replaces healthy bushings, ball joints or tyres. Soft, cracked rubber underneath will ruin a nice kit.

How to choose

Ask yourself:

  1. Do I need height on demand, or am I happy with one good daily height?
  2. Is the car mostly about handling, or mostly about look and comfort?
  3. Am I ready to maintain an air system, or do I want fewer parts?
  4. What is the lowest I can run without destroying splitters and oil pans on my actual routes?

Bring the car and your routes. We will talk ride height against real QC driveway angles, not brochure photos.

FAQ

Are coilovers always stiffer than air?
Often, but not always. A soft coilover can ride looser than a well-set air setup. Damping quality matters more than the label.

Can air suspension be used on track?
Some people do. Most dedicated track builds still use coilovers because the response is more predictable when you are pushing hard.

My factory air bag is leaking. Replace or convert?
Depends on the car and what you want next. Like-for-like strut replacement keeps OEM behaviour. A conversion is a different project. We diagnose the leak first.

Do you do wheel alignment after suspension work?
Alignment is not a service we offer. After any height change you should have geometry checked at a shop that does — wrong camber and toe eat tyres fast.
